Under the egis of the project of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture-“Economic and Environmental Benefits for Vulnerable Communities in Georgia through Sustainable Management of Land”, Regional Environmental Center of Caucasus (REC Caucasus) implements crop rotation practices in Shida Kartli and Kakheti regions. Mentioned project is funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) through the United Nations Environment Program (UN Environment).
Spring crop rotation practice will cover up to 1000 ha in spring of this year and will facilitate the rotation of the following agricultural crops: peas, corn, beans and buckwheat. Selection of beneficiary farmers was conducted under the participation of municipalities and local stakeholders and will be also continued in future. Field projects for the implementation of the sustainable land management practices are planned till the end of 2022 and totally covers 20,000 ha.
Within the components of strengthening the sustainable management practices of land plot and improvement of land’s ecosystem services, implementation of a field project for sustainable management of land has been launched from the Autumn, 2019, aiming the improvement of soil fertility through the implementation of crop rotation in Gori, Kareli, Kvareli and Sagarejo Municipalities. Implementation of the crop rotation system was actively supported by farmers, on bases of which achievement of the prominent effect became possible in terms of improvement of plots fertility. Due to the aforementioned, the crop rotation activities were planned and undergoing for the spring crops.
