Semi-desert and forest, calm and quite, seemingly the dormant Earth but at the same time full of life, with beautiful views, natural monuments, territory enriched by unique representatives of flora and fauna – this is Vashlovani. Protected Areas of Vashlovani are located in Kakheti, in the extreme South-eastern part of Georgia. It was founded on 1935 as the reserve by the initiative of Georgian sciences - Niko Ketskhoveli and Vasil Gusilashvili. Since 2003, for the purpose of extension of the protected areas, the reserve was also added to the national park, which included three natural monuments - Alazani flood meadows ("Walnut Bay"), Eagle Gorge and "Takhti-Tefa" mud volcanoes, with a total area of 35,067.5 hectares.
Protected areas of Vashlovani is the only one in Georgia and one among 100 protected areas existing in 30 European countries, to which the status of European Diploma was granted because of its unique biodiversity, distinguished landscapes, ecosystems and rich variety of plants and animals.
